Seminar from UCL - Dr Martin Colley

Thursday 21 May 1998

A mobile robot for teaching computer architecture.

Dr Martin Colley, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Essex.

The problem: how to teach the basics of computer architecture (eg registers, interrupts, etc.) at undergraduate level, to  Computer Science students who are more interested in playing with the latest web-browsing PC. Solution: equip the first-year Lab. with lots of networked robots having the Wx-Works real-time operating system.  Design some student projects which can be written in C but which (via Vx-Works) can have close control where necessary over the robot's registers, input/output devices, etc. A live demonstration will be given of a desk-top robot.
