document provides an overview of the Architecture for multimedia
conferencing on the Internet used in the MECCANO project. The protocols
mentioned are all specified elsewhere as RFCs, internet-drafts, or ITU
recommendations. Each of these specifications gives details of the
protocol itself, how it works and what it does. This document attempts to
provide the reader with an overview of how the components fit together and
of some of the assumptions made, as well as some statement of direction
for those components still in a nascent stage. Parts of
this document are strongly based on a draft provided for the Multiparty
Multimedia Session Control (MMUSIC) working group of the Internet
Engineering Task Force. Nevertheless it covers a number of areas not
tackled in that draft - or even relevant to the IETF. It is designed to be
a guide to what we are trying to address in the MECCANO project. Keyword
list: Architecture, Multimedia Conferencing, Mbone, Security.

Abstract:
The MECCANO project built on the results of the MERCI project and it improved the toolkit to provide better environments for multimedia collaboration.
This deliverable is a report on the usability of the tools used by and developed within the MECCANO project. These tools have largely been proven by a number of applications within the project described in the deliverable R8.2 of work package 8. The results of this work package, as well as information gathered from other Telematics projects, has been used in assessing the usability of the tools.

This document describes the software being delivered. The deliverable constitutes a specific package of software provided at this date. Any improved or bug-fix versions will be made available as necessary by providers of the individual tools. The purpose of the deliverable is to provide versions of the software which have been improved since the start of the project. During the remainder of the project we will continue to improve the tools and will deliver upgraded versions in a further release D4.3, the second major release of MECCANO tools, in March 2000. In the meantime, the most recent versions of the tools in the MECCANO toolset can always be found under Software on the project web site at:

Abstract: The aim of the MECCANO project
was to provide a robust networked multimedia education and conferencing
environment, suitable for use over a wide range of network technologies.
To cope with the heterogeneity this implies, the Internet Protocol (IP)
was adopted as a unifying platform over a range of layer 2 technologies
(Ethernet, ATM, direct broadcast satellite, ISDN). Where it is not possible
to use native IP, a number of gateways have been developed to other
network architectures. This report describes the
underlying network technologies supported and the way in which the tools
have been developed to adapt to these technologies. It discusses the
performance required of an IP network for the successful use of the
MECCANO tools and then reports on the observed performance in the context
of IPv4 (unicast and multicast) and IPv6. Finally the report describes
the tool support provided for non-IP networks, such as ISDN, ATM and DBS,
and the performance of such networks in the context of MECCANO. Keyword
list: Multimedia Conferencing, adaptation to network performance,
IP-Multicast, IPv6, ATM, DBS, ISDN, PSTN.

Abstract:
We describe the gateway architecture being developed in this workpackage as an extension of the Mbus work ongoing in WP7, and the initial demonstrator applications that leverage and build on the media engines developed in WP4. Two demonstrators have been delivered already: the UCL Transcoding Gateway (in D4.1) and AudioGate (in D4.2). We note directions for future work in the area of demonstrators: StarGate and enhanced versions of AudioGate and the UCL Transcoding Gateway.

Abstract:
This document describes the initial work by MECCANO on session announcement and management facilities. We describe the standards work undertaken by project members, the protocols under development, and the demonstrator applications we are delivering. The major protocol development with MECCANO WP7 is related to the Mbus, although we are also working on SDP, SIP and SAP. The demonstrators are SDR, RAT, FreePhone and AudioGate.

Abstract:
This document combines MECCANO deliverables D6.2 and D7.2 to avoid repetition of the closely related work items. It describes the MECCANO work on conference control and gateway development, showing the close relation between them.
A key development has been the completion of the first revision of the Message Bus system protocol specifications, extensively implemented in the gateways and in other tools. MECCANO has played an active role in control protocol development in both the IETF and ITU-T.
The deliverable follows the structure of D7.1 to enable easy tracking of the significant achievements reached in the project. We begin by relating this deliverable to the others which describe or discuss the toolset. Following a summary of our activities in international standards bodies, we describe the various implementations carried out as part of MECCANO, divided into two main sections – demonstrator applications relating to the standards work in Workpackage 7 and the gateways developed in Workpackage 6, some aspects of which also demonstrate the standards developments. In view of the level of detail provided, some of the protocol descriptions and the finer points of the implementations are provided in appendices. We end with conclusions and an indication of possible future work in this area. The software itself is delivered in D4.3, Second major release of MECCANO tools.

Date of Delivery: May 31, 1999 Author(s): Editor: Roy Bennett, University College London Contributors: Igor
Bokun, ACC; John Robinson, CRC; Jörg
Ott, TELES; Roy
Bennett & Peter Kirstein, UCL. Abstract: The MECCANO project, building on the
results of the MERCI project, is further improving the MERCI toolkit to
provide a better environment for multimedia collaboration. The tools used by the project, whether
developed by MECCANO or from other sources, are proven within the project
by the activities of WP8, Consolidation of Applications. Further
validation and important user feedback is provided by those projects and
users using the MECCANO tools in their work. Some we actively support as
part of WP9, Support for Validation Sites. In this document we report on
the work of supporting our users during the first year of the project. The projects we have supported have
used the tools under the real
conditions for remote teaching, seminars and distributed virtual meetings.
We describe the work of the supported projects and the progress that has
been made by them and by us. Keyword
list:

Information
The project used a modified
and improved version of the web-based project management reporting system
developed for the MERCI Project (RE1007). This system allowed partners to
report on their contributions to their workpackages and the workpackage leaders
to summarise these for the Management and Progress Reports submitted to the
project officer by project management.
