The TOPS-20 FTP software uses TYPE L 36 when transferring files between TOPS-20
machines (and TOPS-10's/TENEX's, for that matter...). I believe the bit-packing
is done essentially identically to TYPE I for 36-bit words. The TOPS-20 FTP
software also supports other, arbitrary file byte sizes using TYPE L xx and
sets the file byte size on the target machine accordingly.
