Point-to-Point links

I wonder whether someone would be so kind as to tell me the revealed
truth about the assignment of IP network numbers to point-to-point links
(like SLIP). From what I can tell from munging around 4.3bsd, it seems
that not everyone (e.g. 4.3bsd) assigns a separate IP network number
to the link itself. I thought it was always the right thing (if a waste)
to assign the link a network number. Can someone tell me how to think
about this? Thanks.
