I've just submitted an RFC that tries to deal with this problem --
it basically is CCITT's X.3 adapted for Telnet, with extensions.
So it does things like local editing, echoing, selective forwarding,
flow control &c, all controllable from the host side.
It -doesn't- try to do as much as RCTE. It also doesn't try to
provide for general local screen editing, e.g. interpreting & buffering cursor
movements -- that seems like an awful lot to pile onto a poor Telnet protocol.
I'm leaving the draft RFC for anonymous FTP from uc.msc.umn.edu,
as "staff/rfc.x3", if anyone's interested.
