I don't think anyone has pointed out the following advantage of
an IP gateway over a level 2 bridge between physical Ethernets.
Ethernet broadcasts are filtered by IP gateways whereas in the case
of bridges, full IP functionality between gateways requires that
all Ethernets so joined see the combined broadcasts of each network
in the group.
