Back in the early 70's when the ARPANET was a little zippier than
it is today, SDAC tried to send full 1600bpi 9 track tape contents from
Virginia to UCLA using a very highly tuned block transfer FTP that got
roughly 18KB continuous across the network. We needed to transfer six
tapes a day and rapidly learned (the hard way) that the US Snail could
outperform the network in bandwidth and cost.
I don't suggest that the network is not efficient or useful but
it easy to misuse particularly with bulk data transfers.
