Your comments on "the Europeans" reminded me that I'd never
gotten around to commenting on a msg Jon sent some time back
containing a quotation to the effect that the trouble with 5,000-
member standards committees is that they spend all their time
debating whether to have croissants or doughnuts for breakfast.
I'm sure you'll agree that the quotation couldn't have been about
ISO or CCITT, since they'd have been debating croissants vs.
brioches--doughnuts would give the American vendors too big a
