mysterious ftp

I am not a network wizard, and this may not be the right group to post
to, but I can't find a better one. Apologies in advance.

I am seeing some ftp behaviour that mystifies me. To be specific, when
I tell ftp to "get" a file, I normally see these messages:

ftp> get foo
        200 PORT command OK
        125 File transfer started correctly
        226 File transfer completed OK
xx bytes transferred in x.xx seconds (xx Kbytes/s)
ftp>

But occasionally I see:

ftp> get foo
        200 PORT command OK
        125 File transfer started correctly
        226 File transfer completed OK
ftp>

Ie, no "bytes transferred" message. When I exit and look for "foo",
it's not there. At all. This can be especially annoying when I'm
"mget"ing a large number of files, and some random number of them
do not arrive.

I am working with a 4.3 BSD Gould, a 4.1 (Wollongong 4.2) BSD Vax, and
an unknown-vintage Silicon Graphics Iris. All are connected to my local
ethernet.

Help ?
