Steve,

The "UCLA code" for TCP/IP supports Telnet, FTP, and SMTP
under OS/MVS. It interfaces not to the IBM "mailer" (because,
incredible as it may seem from our perspective, there is no such critter),
but to a mailer written at UCLA for both Bitnet and the Internet.
There is a fullscreen 3278 interface to this mailer that is comparable
in quality and ease with the mailtool on my Sun workstation, for example.
