PCs and TACs

The last time I saw this question go by (NIC survey to host
administrators, maybe?), John Romkey commented that an alternative to
TAC support for KERMIT would be a TAC option that would pass IP
packets down the RS232 connection, thus allowing direct use of FTP (or
any other network protcol) from PCs. MIT-LCS already has something
vaugely like this for faculty and staff with PCs at home. Now that
the TACACS system is in place a direct IP option on TACs wouldn't be
any particular security risk, either, for them as worry about such
things. Direct IP support is a good bit more flexible than support
for a particular bulk data protocol, so it is something to think
about.
