I totally concur with Jeff that workstations should not think they are
gateways. That is a massive abuse of the IP spec. It should be possible
to turn off all gateway functionality in 4.2 and 4.3BSD machines.
My example of the problem was forwarding loops of unusally addressed
broadcast packets. This happened on a full-duplex network (proNET),
where a packet came in and went out as a hardware broadcast. This is
yet another danger of gateway/workstations, but one you don't see
with half-duplex networks like Ethernet.
